The key differentiator of Solana ETFs: Staking

Unlike Bitcoin’s proof-of-work (PoW), Solana (SOL) uses a delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) model. This means that investors can stake their SOL – delegating it to validators on the network – and typically earn an annual reward of around 5–7%.

Why staking matters

For Solana spot ETFs, it is crucial whether the fund simply holds SOL in custody or actively stakes the underlying assets to generate additional staking rewards and passes some of that yield back to shareholders. This difference can have a material impact on long-term total returns.

Regulatory backdrop

ETF issuers are actively seeking ways to incorporate staking into their products. However, whether staking rewards can be included depends on the conditions set by U.S. regulators, particularly the SEC. As a result, some Solana ETFs may include staking yield, while others may hold SOL without staking.
